Q&A
Vanessa Nica Mueller

What’s your background?
I studied Film & Time based Media at the Academy of Fine Arts Hamburg and one Semester in Marseille. Since then I produced and realized several art films during the last 15 years, which where Shown at Film festivals around Europe and beyond as well as in the exhibition context. Sometimes I curate film programs and for years I was teaching film as well.
Growing up in a small village near the Bavarian alps as the only multiethnical family formed my perspectives on alienation and on hybrid identities. As a PoC female artist claiming space and telling our own stories and our own point of view is empowerment and enrichment.
What influences you artistically?
My approach begins with the resonance of a place. I observe and document situations, mapping both physical and conceptual terrains through scientific approach and artistic experimentation. Recent inspirations include Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Word for World Is Forest, a science fiction work that explores ecology and language or the writings of Audre Lorde which do reflect questions of identity and empowerment through a poetic form.
How do you start a new work?
Starting point is a research process - a personal and collective exploration, weaving together layers, leaving gaps and inspecting dissonance. I am also interested in working with analog material, old film techniques in relation to digital material. I learned one of the most important things as an artist is to trust your own process.
What are you working on right now?
At the moment I do a research for my new film project about ecological crises, emotional machines and (un)broken humanity. Beside that I guess there is always an option to get involved with supporting democracy, building community, sustain humanity, nature and human rights.
