Niki Kohandel

What’s your background?

I began filmmaking with the mini-dv camera my mother used to document my childhood. I made my first films as an art student during the Covid-19 lockdowns and haven't stopped since.

What influences you artistically?

Childhood stories, family anecdotes, the Arabic and Farsi alphabets, etymology and crossovers between languages, Nacer Khemir's desert trilogy, paperboats, protest songs.

How do you start a new work?

Bits from a conversation or an experience are collected as drawings or sentences, some of them eventually grow into stories.

What are you working on right now?

I am writing for a long-form film, about a character's quest for a lost voice in outer-space.
