Q&A
Marlene Denningmann

What’s your background?
I am the oldest sibling.
What influences you artistically?
I wonder about people's actions and what drives them. Anything collectives seem to agree on, any unquestioned belief system that carries a culture – these things intrigue me. I am looking for the crack, the dissonance, the interference, but also the alternative and I ask: What if?
How do you start a new work?
We tend to romanticize the artist's work as purely creative, poetic, almost ethereal. But financing, administration and self advocacy are a large and often invisible side of the profession. So I would like to give a different answer today: I start a new work with writing funding applications. In an often precarious field I need to make sure that I can pay the people I collaborate with and also myself.
What are you working on right now?
I am writing a feature film. It is about women and work, daughters and fathers, doppelgängers and the irresistible lure of (self-) destruction.
