Edwin Rostron works with animation, drawing and painting, taking an improvisatory and process-based approach. His practice is rooted in drawing and its very direct connection to the unconscious and the nervous system.
Edwin Rostron (b.1977) lives and works in London. He has been making animated films for over 25 years and his practice also encompasses drawing, painting, comics and writing. His work is rooted in a direct and spontaneous approach, incorporating improvisation, self-imposed rules and chance operations. Recurring areas of interest in Edwin’s work include paranormal research processes, the unconscious, abstraction, cartooning, horror and sci-fi. He has collaborated with a number of musicians and composers including Supreme Vagabond Craftsman, Apartment House, Atsuko Hatano, Dean Honer and George Benjamin.
Edwin’s work has been exhibited and screened internationally at galleries and film festivals including Ann Arbor Film Festival, Site Gallery, onedotzero, BFI, The Royal Academy of Arts, Camden Arts Centre, ICA, Flatpack, Close-up Cinema, Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation, Artists’ Television Access, S1 Artspace, Imperial War Museum, Deptford Contemporary and Glasgow CCA. Edwin was a Tutor on the Animation Programme at the Royal College of Art between 2016 - 2021, and has been a visiting artist at CalArts, UCA Farnham, LCC and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. In 2013 he founded Edge of Frame, a blog and ongoing series of screenings focusing on experimental animation, holding events at BFI Southbank, Barbican, Close-Up and Whitechapel Gallery.

‘Our Selves Unknown’ takes the 1965 Architectural Press publication ‘Landscape in Distress’ as its raw material, reconfiguring its photographic illustrations, text and cover design into pencil and ink drawings, using a working process of self-enforced rules and restrictions, obstacles and chance.
